SLIDESHOW ABOUT ATIENZA CLICKING THE LINK BELOW:

The origins of Atienza date back to Prehistory. The town is located in a rugged hill, crowned by a castle which was remodelled, having still the remains of the wall, the keep, the moat, an underground reservoir, and several gates.

A remarkable feature in the city's layout is Plaza del Trigo, one of the most beautiful in Castile, with its medieval construction, and buildings that date back to the 16th-18th centuries. It has numerous religious buildings, such as the church of Santa María del Rey, the oldest in Atienza, isolated from the town and turned into a cemetery, but still having its 12th-century apse, and two Romanesque gates; the Romanesque churches of San Salvador, San Gil and San Bartolomé, all of them rebuilt in the 16th century; the church of San Juan, from the 16th century, the only one that still holds services; and the church of Nuestra Señora del Val, with its remarkable main front that has beautiful figures on the archivolt. The monumental heritage of Atienza is complete with the hospital of Santa Ana, from the 18th century; many mansions with porches, including the City Hall, from the 18th century; the lodging house of Cordón; the arch of Arrebatacapas, also known as arch of San Juan, which is what is left of one of the wall's gates; as well as noble palaces.
