Fernando Olivera: El rapto.- TEXT FROM THE NOVEL The goldfinch by Donna Tartt (...) One night we were in San Antonio, and I was having a bit of a melt-down, wanting my own room, you know, my dog, my own bed, and Daddy lifted me up on the fairgrounds and told me to look at the moon. When "you feel homesick", he said, just look up. Because the moon is the same wherever you go". So after he died, and I had to go to Aunt Bess -I mean, even now, in the city, when I see a full moon, it's like he's telling me not to look back or feel sad about things, that home is wherever I am. She kissed me on the nose. Or where you are, puppy. The center of my earth is you". The goldfinch Donna Tartt 4441 English edition

WEEKLY TOPIC "SWEET RITUALS": Dining Local: Giving Thanks

Dining Local
Van SiasThank you, Dough, for helping with a family tradition.
I first thought of taking a look at turkey burgers around the neighborhood, but since this is the time to be giving thanks, I decided to go that route instead. So here are three things that I’m thankful for — all tied around food and restaurants, of course!
3. Variety
It’s always good to have options, and the main streets of the Fort Greene/Clinton Hill/Bed-Stuy area are full of them. It’s nice to be able to go out for Moroccan food at Kif one night, then head a couple of blocks down DeKalb to Brooklyn Public House the next for the gastropub experience. Couscous and burgers stacked six inches high: What more could you ask for?

WEEKLY TOPIC: SWEET RITUALS FROM BBC LEARNING ENGLISH

Meg likes birthdays

In my daughter's class, when a student is on his birthday, all other students sing “happy birthday” for him. Meg’s birthday is on summer holidays, so she misses this celebration. However, one day she came back home from her school and happily told me, that all her classmates song the “birthday song” for her. I’m surprised and answered, “but today is not your birthday!” she said, “it is!---according the lunar calendar. I’ve already check it.”
On my husband’s birthday I asked him whether he’d like a birthday cake. He said, “Don’t bother! I'd like noodles. It will make me a long life.” it is a traditional superstition---long noodles symbolize a long life. Hearing that, Meg said, “Oh, Dad, you should eat a birthday cake. Everyone should eat birthday cake on his birthday!” then she hurried to school. Before leaving, she said, “ Mum, you should persuade him to have a cake. Fruit flavor is the best. ” My husband said to me in a low voice, “She wanted to eat some cake!” She did! At this night she ate all the fruit on the top of the cake and a big piece of the cake.

The Book of Potentially Catastrophic Science: 50 Experiments for Daring Young Scientists
It’s never been more important to engage a child's scientific curiosity, and Sean Connolly knows just how to do it—with lively, hands-on, seemingly "dangerous" experiments that pop, ooze, crash, and teach! Now, the author of The Book of Totally Irresponsible Science, takes it one step further: He leads kids through the history of science, and then creates amazing yet simple experiments that demonstrate key scientific principles.

Tame fire just like a Neanderthal with the Fahrenheit 451 experiment. Round up all your friends and track the spread of "disease" using body glitter with an experiment inspired by Edward Jenner, the vaccination pioneer who's credited with saving more lives than any other person in history.  Show More

WEEKLY TOPIC: STRANGE BEHAVIOUR TOP 8/10 CASES OF STRANGE BEHAVIOUR

8/10 Stanley A. Fulham
Ny-Looking-At-Ufos
Stanley A. Fulham is a man who has published a collection of writings that examine extraterrestrial activity, world climate change, terrorist activity and unexplained phenomenon. Fulham’s most recent achievement was a book titled Challenges of Change. In the book, he describes an elaborate alien plan that has been implemented to help save our planet from environmental contamination. In his writings, Stanley has indicated that the universe is governed by a regional galactic authority, which consists of the intelligent civilizations Pleiades, Orion, Sirius, Bootes, Alpha Centauri, Comsuli, Zeta Reticuli and Pouseti. According to Fulham, in 2010, the Council of 8 decided to intervene with advanced technology to clean Earth’s atmosphere before an environmental collapse occurs. The council did so after reaching the conclusion that modern human technology can’t prevent species extinction on Earth.
He specifically mentions that the world will enter a transitional period between the years of 2010-2014, which will be accompanied by climate changes, monetary collapse, natural disaster and governmental disruptions. On September 13, 2010, Stanley Fulham gave a press release for his book Challenges of Change. In the statement, he predicted that a fleet of UFOs would descend upon Earth’s major cities on Wednesday, October 13. On the afternoon of the 13th, thousands of people witnessed and reported several shiny, circular objects flying high above the streets of Manhattan. Videos and unexplained photos of the event quickly appeared online. New York’s three major airports experienced a closure on the day in question. Stanley Fulham also predicted a series of UFO sightings over Moscow in early January 2011, followed by activity in London. News articles have documented a wave of unexplained aircraft over Moscow in January of 2011.
We have examined the predictions of Stanley A. Fulham and the events of October 13, 2010. However, we must explore another side of the story. The information surrounding the life of Stanley A. Fulham is choppy, inconsistent, and hard to find. Some Internet pages claim that he served in the U.S. military, while others state NORAD and the Canadian forces. There is also the coincidence that Stanley’s name is the same as a collection of English football clubs, Accrington Stanley (Stanley A) and Fulham F.C. In Stanley’s writings, he mentions the alien conspiracy, but also tackles a wide variety of international issues, including terrorism, world banking problems, and the September 11 attacks. In regard to 9/11, Challenges of Change says that the WTC towers were destroyed by jet fuel alone, not explosives, and that it was not an inside job.
The book specifically mentions the WTC Building #7, and states that it was destroyed by sympathetic vibration in the ground. Certain pieces of information in Fulham’s writings appear to have an agenda. For this reason, it has been suggested that he is a creation or pawn used by the US and UK governments to pass misinformation to the public. Ultimately, using the conspiracy of alien involvement on Earth to explain occurrences that make no scientific sense, like UFO sightings and the physics surrounding the WTC collapses. This theory would suggest that the government was responsible for the spectacle seen on October 13, 2010, and that they wanted the lights to be viewed by the New York population. In December of 2010, it was reported that Stanley A. Fulham had died after a long battle with cancer.

I know you are here to kill me. Shoot, coward, you are only going to kill a man.

Che Guevara (1928-1967) Argentine doctor, author, politician, Marxist revolutionary, military theorist and guerrilla leader
Che Guevara, photographed 1960 by Alberto KordaGhe Guevara is the iconic Marxist revolutionary and freedom fighter whose life was cut short at the age of 39. His travels throughout Latin America as a young medical student convinced him that the continent's inequalities of wealth and opportunity were the inevitable result of capitalism and neocolonialism. To his mind the only remedy was world revolution. This belief was fortified by the CIA-assisted overthrow of Guatemalan President Jacobo Arbenz Guzmán, with whose social reforms Guevara had become involved.
