At the launch of the Europe-wide initiative against corporal punishment of children in Zagreb, (Croatia), on 15 June, Deputy Secretary General Maud de Boer-Buquicchio said there was ''no footnote'' in the European Convention granting human rights to adults only. ''Abolishing corporal punishment is a matter of vision and political leadership,'' she added. Jadranka Kosor, Croatia’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Family, Veterans’ Affairs and Intergenerational Solidarity said: ''It is important to move from smacking to positive parenting, nurturing and love.''

For many children in Europe, physical punishment is
still a reality. This must stop!
Set on this goal, the German organisation Association
for a New Education(ANE), the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC) in the UK and the Nobody–Children Foundation (FDN) in Poland are together working in the project "Respect Works Out!" (April 2007 – April 2009).
We consider non-violence as the basis for a child-friendly, democratic Europe. Non-violence, we define as the absence of all forms of physical punishment against children, including a light smack.
In Germany, the introduction of a new law on the right of the child to a non-violent upbringing in 2000 in connection with a broad awareness raising campaign has lead to a significant decline in physical punishment against children.
The project builds on this positive experience in order to advance the EU-wide implementation of a legal ban and to promote non-violent parenting across Europe.
FAMILY AS A TEAM - SUPPORTING POSITIVE PARENTING
We see the family as a team that takes diverging interests seriously and negotiates solutions that are suitable for all team members. There is no place for physical punishment of any kind here. Highlighting the benefits of non-violent parenting is a central aim of a letter for parents developed by the German project partner. It helps parents to understand children – behaviour better and provides useful advice on how to avoid situations getting out of control.
EXCHANGE OF GOOD PRACTICE - THE POSITIVE PARENTING BOOKLET
The project partners FDN and NSPCC have translated and adapted this positive parenting booklet to the country-specific context for parents in Poland and the UK. Around 50 000 copies have been disseminated to parents in Poland, the UK and in Germany. We evaluated parents' responses in each country and made a transnational comparison of the results. The adaption process itself provided us with new and interesting insights into the cultural differences of each of the three partner countries, starting with the format chosen through to the means of disseminating the booklet. See Dissemination
AWARENESS RAISING - EQUAL PROTECTION FOR CHILDREN
The project seeks to root the right of the child to a non-violent upbringing firmly in public discourse, in law and policy measures and in parental practice. Depending on the state of the debate and the legal and political progress made in each of the project countries, Respect Works Out! is organising a number of national events targeted at parents, policy makers, experts, media representatives and the general public. In the UK and Poland, a lot of effort is focusing on the introduction of a legal ban on corporal punishment. In Germany, the project is supporting the call for children – rights to be explicitly enshrined in the German Constitution to strengthen child protection amongst other things.
For the different national activities, we are benefitting from the exchange of experience between the three project partners that the project facilitates.

According to EL PAIS INTERNATIONAL "Artists up in arms in Spain": “Now they hug the robber".
The culture industry seemed disoriented following last Tuesday’s congressional defeat of the
Sinde law. A survey of around
20 musicians, filmmakers, producers, actors, writers and philosophers evidenced a widespread feeling of indignation
over “a direct aggression that
breaks the rule of law,” in the
words of film producer Agustín
Almodóvar, brother of director
Pedro Almodóvar.
The writer Fernando Savater
said “the clumsiness of a government that introduces this piece
of legislation as a mere clause of
a generic law and the deplorable spectacle of all groups voting against it” caused himto feel
“shame and desolation.”
Meanwhile, writing in EL
PAÍS, the singer Alejandro Sanz
accused politicians of acting in a
cowardly and hypocritical way.
“I think many of them, despite
knowing the law was fair, voted
against it for their own benefit
or due to cowardice,” he said.
“Here piracy is protected [...];
here they voted to protect the
right of the pirate to keep his
musical brothel open and they
voted against the artist... and
our rights... Do you know how
many jobs have been lost in music because of the [internet] Taliban and their accomplices?”
Also writing in EL PAÍS, actor Javier Bardem expressed
similar concern for those working behind the scenes in the
film industry. “Now there is no
law protecting those who have
been robbed. Now they hug the
robber.”
One group, the Creators Platformfor Copyright, has circulated via email a nine-point manifesto outlining its position in relation to the Sinde law rejected
by Congress. The manifesto is
signed by 150 names from the
cultural world, including Savater, writer and filmmaker Vicente Molina Foix and the author Enrique Vila Matas.
“We demand the government, political parties and the
media do not succumb to the
