Fernando Olivera: El rapto.- TEXT FROM THE NOVEL The goldfinch by Donna Tartt (...) One night we were in San Antonio, and I was having a bit of a melt-down, wanting my own room, you know, my dog, my own bed, and Daddy lifted me up on the fairgrounds and told me to look at the moon. When "you feel homesick", he said, just look up. Because the moon is the same wherever you go". So after he died, and I had to go to Aunt Bess -I mean, even now, in the city, when I see a full moon, it's like he's telling me not to look back or feel sad about things, that home is wherever I am. She kissed me on the nose. Or where you are, puppy. The center of my earth is you". The goldfinch Donna Tartt 4441 English edition

THE MOMENT OF TRUTH

It seamed as if I had been waiting at the back of the crowded hall for hours as item after item was produced and sold. Finally the auctioneer announced Lot 64 and held up the small dark painting in its ornate gilded (structure, shell, frame, border). He looked around the room impassively as hi invited (bids, sales, purchases, bets). This was the moment I've been waiting for. My heart began to (strike, pound, drum as the amounts rose higher and higher. Five hundred pounds, si hundred pounds -the tension in the room was (accumulating, multiplying, mounting, soaring). Sudenly I was on my feet. I heard myself shout "One thousand pounds.! A (sea, carpet, cloud, spread) of faces turned to look at me as people gasped in astonishment. The auctioneer paused, looked round the room and, seeing no further signals, brought his hammer down with a crash to confirm the sale. Feeling weak at the knees I sat down again, (overpowered, overcome, overtaken, overdone) with relief.
