In just one week, two stars made bipolar disorder confessions. First Catherine Zeta-Jones, nowDisney starlet Demi Lovato.
GEORGE STEPHANOPOULOS: “And this revelation about finding out she had this diagnosis with bipolar, that actually- you did this interview before all the Catherine Zeta-Jones stuff was in the news.”
ROBIN ROBERTS: “Thanks for bringing that up. It was a couple weeks ago that I sat down with Demi, and then when Catherine Zeta-Jones just recently revealed that she was bipolar, Demi sent her a tweet and people were wondering, like- of support- and people are like, well why is she? Now people know.”
GEORGE STEPHANOPOULOS: “Now they get it.” (Good Morning America)
Lovato sat down with Good Morning America, while Zeta-Jones landed the latest cover of People Magazine, to discuss their battles.
So, many are asking, why come out with such shocking secrets? Medical contributor Lisa Oz tells New York’s WNYW it’s about myth busting.
LISA OZ: “She actually came forward, and I think she chose to do so to get this out in the public, to talk about bipolar disorder, so people don’t feel shamed. So that they realize it’s something that they can seek help for. And, quite frankly, they can understand that anyone can get this.”
And HLN’s Jane Velez-Mitchell asks the question on the minds of many – are stars more prone to this problem?
JANE VELEZ MITCHELL: “These young stars certainly are not immune to the psychological disorders that plague other teenagers. In fact, I would think maybe they have even more pressure, so they’re even more likely to get these kinds of syndromes.”
GALINA ESPINOZA: “I mean imagine living out your teenage years in front of a camera, with a constant scrutiny not only from paparazzi, but from Twitter and Facebook. I mean we’ve talked about technology and how that’s impacting teens today.”
Bipolar disorder is brought on by extreme stress. Zeta-Jones recently watched her husband battle cancer, while Lovato’s a part of the ever-scrutinized Disney crowd. A writer for Time’s Healthland blog suggests these two seemingly “normal” stars will help shatter stigmas.
“The celebrity face of bipolar disorder has typically been, well, sort of crazy (think Britney Spears or, so it's been speculated, Charlie Sheen). So when a publicist for Catherine Zeta-Jones … announced that the actress had sought treatment for bipolar 2, it was a surprise to many.”
Other notable names with the disorder? Carrie Fisher, Sting and Ben Stiller. An About.com blogger battling bipolar disorder argues this is exactly the kind of press the mental health community needs.
“These days, every time a celebrity is frank about having bipolar disorder it benefits us all. The public is taught that this illness doesn't mean we're all violent, out of control, dangerous.”
And some good news- the disorder’s not holding either actress back. A part was written for Zeta-Jones in the new Rock of Ages musical movie, while Lovato’s recording a new album.
