Fernando Olivera: El rapto.- TEXT FROM THE NOVEL The goldfinch by Donna Tartt (...) One night we were in San Antonio, and I was having a bit of a melt-down, wanting my own room, you know, my dog, my own bed, and Daddy lifted me up on the fairgrounds and told me to look at the moon. When "you feel homesick", he said, just look up. Because the moon is the same wherever you go". So after he died, and I had to go to Aunt Bess -I mean, even now, in the city, when I see a full moon, it's like he's telling me not to look back or feel sad about things, that home is wherever I am. She kissed me on the nose. Or where you are, puppy. The center of my earth is you". The goldfinch Donna Tartt 4441 English edition

Pull out all the stops

mylifecomics.wordpress.com
Meaning: If you pull out all the stops, you do everything you can to make sure something is successful.
For example:
  • They pulled out all the stops for the launch of their new range of perfumes, and even paid movie stars to come along.
  • The Chinese government pulled out all the stops in their efforts to make the Beijing Olympics the best Olympic Games ever.
Origin: Metaphorical, and related to the fact that the volume and timbre of a traditional pipe organ can be controlled in part by pulling out small knobs called "stops". If an organist "pulled out all the stops" on the organ, it would create a very big sound when played.

Quick Quiz:
Indira's family were very proud and they pulled out all the stops to make sure her wedding was
  1. as spectacular as possible
  2. as cheap as possible
  3. as secret as possible
