must not
obligation not to do something: You mustn't talk to him like that.                       
should/ought to
advice: You should see a doctor.
recommendation: You ought to see the castle before you leave.
polite obligation: Guests should not smoke in the bedrooms.
uncertainty: Should we lock both the doors?
expectation: They should be here by now.
should with thinking verbs, to make them less direct: I shouldn’t think the meeting will take long.
can
permission: Can I use the telephone?
can't
impossibility: This can’t be the right place!
can + be
criticism: He can be so annoying!
will
assumption: They’ll be here in a minute.
won't
refusal: I won’t stop until I get what I want.
may/might
possibility: We might need an umbrella.
might as well
the last option, when the speaker is not keen: We might as well just pay the bill.
must
certainty: They must be hungry by now.
