Live from New York- It’s Saturday Night! Well- actually, it was the capitol city’s annual nerd prom, AKA, the White House Correspondents’ dinner. But SNL’s Seth Meyers did have a starring role.
“These were my birth certificate jokes, so thank you for the timing on that Mr. President. Now unusable. “Who told you I had birth certificate jokes? It was Assange wasn’t it? Is Biden still Vice President? Because if not, I’m down to like, thank you and God Bless America.”
The dinner is a time for the country’s politicos to gather and mock the progress... or lack thereof, on Capitol Hill. And this the main target of this year’s jabs? Who else, but the business-mogul turned birther, Donald Trump.
“Donald Trump is here tonight. Now I know he’s taken some flack lately but no is happier, no is prouder to put this birth certificate issue to rest than the Donald. And that’s because he can finally get back to focusing on the issues that matter, like, did we fake the moon landing.”
Perhaps it was only fair for President Obama to get back at the reality host whose given him so much grief lately.
But as ABC reports, Donald didn’t look too happy in his role as the the night’s punching bag.
“What will it take to get Donald to laugh?”
“I guess he wasn’t amused by some of those jokes.”
A blogger for the New York Times Caucus adds....
“It was almost painful to watch, the juxtaposition of the president, flexing his new post-birther comedy chops, and the real estate mogul-cum-politician, grimacing at his table as Mr. Obama basked in his post-long-form-birth-certificate glow.”
Most critics ranked Obama’s performance as an A+. A blogger for the New Statesman writes....
“Barack Obama is, predictably, rather good at the whole thing. He also benefited this year from the open goal that was ‘birtherism’, making several cracks at the expense of Fox News and Donald Trump.”
But the president and Meyers weren’t the only jokesters of the evening. The Hill highlights some of the night’s best commentary- which came from the party’s very own guests, via Twitter.
“@pwgavin: I get the feeling that, after #nerdprom, Trump's chances of running just increased 30%. #pissed”
"@ktumulty: Am sitting 2 feet from trump at #whcd #nerdprom. Some serious sucking up going on here. Everyone wants to meet him."
"@TheFix: Rahm Emanuel and Donald Trump just shook hands. Also, the world just imploded."
After the dinner, reporters asked Trump if he thought the jokes were funny. His answer? “Not really.”
